Greg, the report and commentary:
May 23, 1999, Elizabeth City, three heats (Windward, reach, runm, windward back to 1st mark, back to 3rd mark, back to start/finish line. Wind SW at 15 kts, gusting higher. Starting together with 4 or 5 Sunfish.
Results: Heat One: Brian Gregory, George Bailey, Greg Duncan. Heat Two: Brian Gregory, Greg Duncan (George DSQ for sailing over finish line on way to 3rd. mark second time). Heat Three, Brian Gregory, George Bailey, Greg Duncan.
Commentary. Greg tested a new dagger board. Shaped like a broad sword, about 5.5 feet long, about 8 inches wide and perhaps 3/4ths thick at thickest, with a sword-type point at the bottom. Greg decided it created too much healing force, especially in today's wind. Brian got the start heat one, with Greg just behind and George following. George lucked out at the finish by not tacking off the shore and just made the finish line on one tack from the downwind mark, beating Greg, who otherwise was well ahead of George the rest of the race. George got the start heat two, as the race "committee" started the heat one minute early and George was nearest to the line when the gun went, whereas Brian nd Greg were off aways. George led by a hundred yards or so but on the second time around the marks forgot he had to go back to the third mark from the first mark and sailed over the starting/finsh line, and thus was disqualified. Being far enough ahead not to interfere with the others, due to the lucky start, George elected to finish the course. Running down with his board all the way up, he rolled over backwards (to windward) in a puff. Actually, he just wanted to test his new waterproof camera while it is still under warranty. (He has not opened it yet, but it kept shooting later in the day.) Now George was in the rear, but he finished going around anyway after getting his moth upright. He only lost one shoe in the process, unlike Greg Allen in the St. Pete race, who there topped him with two. So for now GA remains the champ in the shoe overboard category. (George will try to catch up later this summer.) The last race also started a minute early (four minutes from raising the blue flag), but we were ready for this little RC trick this time. Brian got the start, George was 2nd over, with Greg third. So it stayed all the way around. George especially liked the good winds, though Greg and Brian, being somewhat lighter, had to work harder than George to windward.
