by George Bailey

Greg, the report and commentary:

Three heats beginning at 2:45 PM and finishing around 4:15 PM. Three marks, triangular course, once around then back to mark three, back to mark 1, then to the finish line. Winds: heat one, 1-2, heat two, 2-3 heat 3, 4-8. Great NC BBQ "Pig Pickin" dinner afterwards. Five moths racing.

Results: Overall: First: Brian Gregory, Second: Erky Gregory, Third, Greg Duncan.

Heat One: Brian Gregory, Erky Gregory, Greg Duncan, George Bailey, Ben Reed.

Heat Two: Brian Gregory, Erky Gregory, Greg Duncan, George Bailey, Ben Reed.

Heat Three: Brian Gregory, Erky Gregory, Greg Duncan, George Bailey, Ben Reed.

Commentary. In the first two heats, the boats pretty much stayed in the order of starting (as best I could tell). In the third heat there was some shifting of positions at least temporarily on the windward runs. The first heat was a drifter. The wind still was pretty light for heat two. In the third heat there was a bit more wind, so it was more interesting. In this heat Erky, Brian, George and Greg were close at the windward mark the second time around. Erky and Brian did some amazing pinching so as not to have to tack to make the mark, which George and Greg could make without pinching, which was a lucky thing, at least in George's case. Erky and Brian pulled ahead on the run to the third mark. Greg was right behind George at the thrid mark. George cut the mark too close and went into irons avoiding hitting it, Greg cut just under George and also went into irons. Seemed as if we would be in irons forever, as George could not bear off until Greg did, and Greg couldn't go backwards until George did, and so . . . But finally we got going again, with Greg in front, and that's how we finished.

After the race the wind piped up to 10 or perhaps 12. George stayed out and played for awhile, delighting in there finally being enough wind for his Challenger moth to plane on a close reach! (The race course turned out to be to windward and downhill, no close reaches. Unless you want to count overshooting the windward mark, that is.)

The Hertford people put on a really nice spread. A pig was prepared in a pig-cooker, NC BBQ style, and was very tasty.

Brief Commentary from Pete Overman:

Greg we had good race here in hertford last weekend even though it started as a drifter. The wind shifted and gave us a good 5 to 10 s/w just as the gun sounded. the turnout was not as good as last year but 27 boats is still ok. Next year, right? We cooked a pig and passed out the pots to the winners. any day on the river is good and this day was no exception.

Thank you
Pete Overman
