MASER

Al Whitner - George Albaugh

This is the second attempt to convert an old laser hull to a Classic Moth. This boat differs from Mark Saunder's original Maser in that Al dispensed with the laser centerboard trunk, which allowed him to move the center of lateral resistance to a more favorable location within the shortened hull. However, Al decided not to straighten the stem as Mark did and thus does give away a bit of water line length. Al appears to be using a Sunfish racing Centerboard, while Mark has retained the stock Laser board. There are no doubt other differences between these two adaptations. Joe Bousquet is also planning to build a Maser for a Norfolk area junior sailor. It will be interesting to see how these slightly different attempts stack up against each other. The laser hull does provide a fairly well behaved entry level shape for both junior sailors and also seniors who still want to race Moth Boats, but don't want the tippyness of a Mistral or Sprite. There are plenty of old, slack laser hulls kicking around that can be had either for free or cheap, so there appears to be plenty of starting material. No doubt Walt, Mark, Joe B., Randy Stark and Al Whitner can and will add more to this story.
