2000 Pelican Marina Open Regatta Report

Greg,

I raced the newly modified Lumpy last Sunday at Elizabeth City. Four of us raced two short heats in very light air, then three of us raced one more short heat in light air. Erky, Mike, Brian, and I. My finishes were 4, 1, 3. Bad starts twice, dumb tack on my better start. First two heats all boats were close together. Third heat 2nd and 3nd place were close, but Brian got a shift and got to the windward mark well before Mike and I 3rd. hear.

2nd heat, I was last to the windward mark, but managed to sail under the lee of the other three boats reaching to 2nd mark. When I do things just right Lumpy has minimal wetted surface, so in the light air she reached faster than the other three boats.

After the third heat the wind came up to maybe 3 kts occasionally and Brian and I sailed together a bit. I was able to get Lumpy going faster than Brian moth to windward for awhile. I have still to learn how to get her to go to windward. She does not like to be pinched, for one. I think that in her new configuration she has potential. Now its up to the skipper - can't blame the boat anymore, as I could with Curley!

I have photos but have not had time to get them developed yet.

Cheers,

George
