by George Bailey

Greg, the report and commentary:

Race Results, Portsmouth Regatta, May 29, 1999.

Drifter for the most part: Winds 0-2, occasional "gusting" to 5. Patchy. Current. Tringular course, twice around and back to windward to the finish. Two heats, 10:40 AM to around 1:15 or so for last moth to finish in second heat. R&R after second heat. RC decided too little wind for a third heat.

Overall: First: Mark Saunders; Second: Chris Harrell; Third: Joe Bousquet (on time (?), tied in placing on finish of two heats with Walt Collins).

Order of finish for the two heats:

Heat One: Mark Saunders, Walt Collins, Joe Bousquet, Chris Harrell, Brian Gregory, Erdy Gregory, Susan Bosquet, Joe Courter, Greg Duncan, George Bailey, George Albaugh.

Heat Two: Mark Saunders, Erky Gregory, Chris Harrell, Joe Bousquet, Walt Collins, Brian Gregory, George Bailey, Joe Courter, Susan Bousquet, George Albough, Greg Duncan.

Commentary: Mark raced his newly built Mystral type. The boat/skipper combination proved itself in these wind conditions. As the results indicate, the spotty winds across the course contributed to variety in the finishes of the two heats. The best wind usually was best near the windward mark.

The current at this mark one caused several moths to hit it. This also was caused by snagging the mark's anchor line. One of the larger boats sailing in the PHRF race snagged and drug mark one about 200 yards downwind on the second time around in the first heat, just as the leading moths were working up to this mark. Off and on throughout the race, moths that were ahead at one point then were becalmed while others passed in apatch of good air 50 yrds away. Nearing mark two on a broad reach/run, the wind would suddenly shift, requiring us to harden up to reach the mark. There was a dead spot about 2/3rds of the way to mark three, which enabled those behind to close the gap towards this mark. The dead spot got larger as the day progressed.
