My First Moth Boat Regatta By:Tom Charles
In one of those happy net accidents, I ran into the Moth page and it brought a flood of memories and a smile about the summer of 1967. I was in high school and sailing out of the Norfolk Naval Sailing Assoc. I was dating Bonnie Wiggins who was a friend of your sister. I also knew Courtney Reid and, not having a boat of my own, alternated crewing on his new Dutchman and sailing the green Moth, which I believe you built (Walt Collins).
I, unfortunately, was the one who dismasted your plywood boat at the Hampton Regatta that summer. Too aggressive sheeting parted the forestay and that was all she wrote. I had heard recently of the renaissance of the older Moths which is good to see and quite a contrast from the 11 pound wonders. I haven't done too much sailing lately but I'm still leaning towards small boats as I own a 16' sea kayak.
Again, the web site is very enjoyable and brings back a pleasant year for me.
