38th Annual Virginia Governor’s Cup
Ware River Yacht Club

by Mark Saunders

Hi Greg,

Report and Commentary:

As usual, Ware River Yacht Club put on a great regatta - the food was great, the weather was great and we all had a lot of fun. 7 Moth boats showed up 2 from Virginia, 3 from Maryland and 2 Pennsylvania, and we got in 5 great races.

On Saturday we had perfect conditions after sea breeze settled in. Winds started at about 5-10 out of SE and increased to ~15 by the end of the third race. Mark and Craig sailed their Mistrals and duked it out in the first two races, including a tacking dual up the last leg of the second race. Mark managed to win both races while Joe in his new Maser battled with Bob Patterson in his rebuilt Shelley that he got from George Albaugh. Racing was actually pretty tight - in one of these races, the four of them rounded the windward mark just seconds apart. Mike Parson sailed his Dorr Willey, Bill Boyle sailed his Shelley and Lew Trautz brought his Fletcher Bailey MK II.

The day brought quite a bit of carnage. Mike had to go back in to repair his forestay, Lew got towed back in after filling up his boat and Mark broke his rudder just prior to the third race.

Saturday night the club put on a great barbeque dinner with plenty to drink. The club put up most of the Maryland contingent in the guest quarters of one of the locals. I'm told it was on the water with a fully stocked bar. I think Bob and Bill will be back for sure. Mike and Lew camped at the club and enjoyed the outdoors.

On Sunday we got in 2 races with first in 5-10. second race about 10 again a seabreeze out of the SE. Mike sailed Joe's Tryumph and loved it. He's now definitely planning to build one himself. Unfortunately, we might lose Lew - he's considering moving to San Diego. Craig dominated the two races; Mark got a second and Bob managed to beat Joe in both races.

I've tried to get the score sheet so I could show the whole results, but haven't been able to do it. I think this is how the reesults came out for the first 4 boats in each race. My apologies if I got this wrong.

2776, A 1965 McCutcheon Shelley sailed then by Carol Zimmerman of Sea Isle City, NJ Yacht Club, which I was able to salvage when George Albaugh generously gave me the hull 3 weeks before Brigantine.I believe she won the Womans Nationals in it in the late 60's.
